What NOT to Put in Your Dumpster (And What to Do Instead)

Most household and construction debris is fair game for a dumpster or junk removal pickup. But a handful of materials need extra care — either because they're hazardous, regulated, or require a separate recycling stream. Here's a general guide to what needs special handling, and where it can go. (Heads up: with Owen's Junk & Debris Removal specifically, we can still take most of these — see the note at the end.)

Hazardous materials

Paint, chemicals, pesticides, motor oil, and propane tanks fall into this category. These require licensed hazardous waste disposal rather than standard landfill handling. Most counties run periodic household hazardous waste collection events — check with your local solid waste department for the next date near you.

Tires

Tires aren't accepted in most dumpsters or standard debris loads because they require a separate recycling stream. Many tire shops will accept old tires for a small fee, especially if you're buying replacements there.

Batteries

Car batteries and certain household batteries contain materials that need dedicated recycling. Auto parts stores frequently accept old car batteries, sometimes with a small credit toward a new one.

Medical and biohazard waste

Sharps, medications, and biohazard materials require specialized disposal for safety reasons. Many pharmacies offer medication take-back programs, and some local health departments provide sharps disposal options.

What you CAN put in a dumpster or junk removal load

Good news: we take just about anything. Hazardous materials, tires, and batteries just need special handling and get quoted separately — the only items we can't accept at all are medical and biohazard waste.
